Do-It-Yourself-Tips
Cooling and heating your home uses more energy and drains more energy dollars than any other system in your home. On average, 44 percent of your utility bill goes for heating and cooling. No matter what kind of heating and air-conditioning system you have in your house, you can save money and increase comfort with a few simple tips and proper maintenance. Remember, the best approach combines equipment maintenance with appropriate insulation, weather-proofing, and thermostat settings. Combined, you can cut your energy bills in half.
- Set your Thermostat to 79 degrees or higher in the summer and 65 or lower in the winter. Dress accordingly. If you have a heat pump, adjust the temperature up no more than 3 degrees in winter so as to avoid using Auxiliary Heat, which costs more to run.
- Clean or Replace your filter once a month, unless you have a Specialty Filter that only needs maintenance one to four times a year. Join our Filter Club as we'll do the work for you every month.
- Use Ceiling Fans in Summer to cool a room, turn them off when you leave. A Ceiling Fan left running will cost $3-6 per month. Only use when you can enjoy it.
- Don't place lamps or other hot items near your Thermostat. This gives a false reading and will alter temperatures in your home.
- Install Weather Stripping to doors and windows. Delmarva One Hour Air can perform an Energy Audit on your home to find weaknesses in your homes insulation and other energy wasters.
- Look for Energy Star® Appliances when shopping around. They may cost a little extra upfront, but will save energy for years.
- Turn off lights when you leave a room in summer. This reduces heat build up. Also replace light bulbs with new energy efficient bulbs.
- Clean the Lint Filter and Vent Hose on your Dryer. This will allow clothes to dry faster, saving energy. Delmarva One Hour Air can clean your Dryer Vent and all the vents in your heating and cooling system. Ask about a discount on cleaning both.
- Join our Comfort Club and get your system Professionally Tuned Up annually for Optimum Performance. Only pennies a day and HUGE SAVINGS!
- Consider replacing your old heating and air conditioning system with a new Energy Efficient system or even investing in Geothermal. Heating and cooling can add up to 60% of your energy bills. Geothermal could reduce heating and cooling bills by as much 70%! This alone could save $1000's every year.
- Consider replacing your Water Heater with a new Heat Pump style or at least one that is Energy Star® rated. Water Heaters can account for as much as 30% of your energy bill. This alone could save $100's every year. Our Sister Company Benjamin Franklin Plumbing can help you with this including a Free Estimate on a new Energy Efficient Water Heater.
